The method involves generating an image data prediction block from an image data block of a base layer and another image data block of an enhancement layer spatially near a third image data block, using an over sampling module and an image data prediction block generating module. The former block and the latter block are previously coded and reconstructed using respective coding modules. A residue block is generated from the prediction block and the third data block using a subtraction module. The residue block is coded using a coding unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for coding a sequence of images presented in the form of base and enhancement layers (2) a method for decoding a part of a bit stream representative of a sequence of images presented in the form of base and enhancement layers (3) a device for decoding a part of a bit stream representative of a sequence of images presented in the form of base and enhancement layers (4) a coded bit stream representative of a sequence of images presented in the form of base and enhancement layers.
