A method is disclosed for generating seismic data by interpolating between estimated zero-offset data sets and recorded near-field data sets. A boat (110) tows a plurality of instrument cables or streamers (10) that are used to record acoustic signals generated in the water by a seismic source (13). The seismic source (can be an air gun) has a hydrophone associated with it to record a very near-field signal, and has the signals that represent direct arrivals from the seismic source partly muted. The remaining part of the obtained signal is used to estimate the zero-offset data set. This data set can then be used to interpolate data from the conventional acquisition location, such as the streamers, to locations closer to the source.
