OFDM channel estimation involves interpolation of pilot symbols in the time and/or frequency axes. The quality of the channel estimate can also be improved by filtering the received pilots before interpolation, this is typically done in the time and/or frequency axes (see Figs. 2 and 3). However this can necessitate the need to buffer large numbers of symbols and/or have reduced effectiveness for certain channel conditions. The invention proposes to filter pilot symbols located along a diagonal in the time/frequency plane which results in improved channel estimates with reduced memory requirements.
