Identifying repeating video sections by comparing video fingerprints from detected candidate video sequences

A method for identifying repeating video sequences such as adverts or channel information comprises: determining a set of candidate video sequences from a video stream, e.g. by detecting features such as monochrome frames, scene breaks, hard cuts, dissolves, fades, edge change ratios, or by changes in motion length vector or action changes; creating video fingerprints (e.g. by colour histograms or colour coherence vectors, via sub-sampling) for the candidate video (sub)sequences; creating matched sequences by comparing the video fingerprints against each other, and grouping / isolating the matched sequences as being repeating. A method and system for the determination of new video segments is presented in which candidate sequences are recognized and stored, and analysis is performed on fingerprints of segments of the candidate sequences to isolate repeating video sequences, without prior knowledge of those repeating sequences. Use of the method for the creation of a library of repeating advertisements is also independently claimed.
