Leak detection device for fluid filled pipelines

A leakage detection device 30 for pressurised liquid distributions systems 10 such as water distribution systems comprises a length of pipe 36 having a coupling 32 to connect to a hydrant 14 of the pipeline system 10 to be tested for leaks. The pipe has a solenoid valve 40 that when closed from an open position, transmits a pressure wave from the valve 40 through the pipe 36. A pressure sensor 34 disposed adjacent the coupling 32 detects pressure variations in liquid in the pipe caused by the pressure wave being reflected from discontinuities (e.g. leaks) in the system 10. A controller records and analyses measured pressures, and calculates a distance from the pressure sensor 34 to a detected discontinuity. A cepstrum analysis may be used to analyse the pressure measurements.
