Disclosed is a system for booting up mobile computing devices. The system has a supervising virtual machine monitor called a hypervisor, loaded onto the computing device. The hypervisor acts to place the computing device into one of a plurality of operating modes depending on the operating environment, particularity when the device boots up. Each mode being associated with a particular environment. One mode may be diskless with an external environment eg a network, internal or external (internet), or a local environment. The local environment being the operating system preloaded onto the device. The hypervisor may run two modes at the same time for example an external and local modes, with the hypervisor accepting input from the external environment for the local operating system.
