An article of clothing such as a fireman's protective jacket is provided with ventilation channels. A first temperature sensor 6 and a first moisture sensor 11 measure the temperature and moisture content of the inlet air flow 7 into the article of clothing. A second temperature sensor 17 and a second moisture sensor 12 measure the temperature and moisture content of the outlet air flow 10 from the article of clothing. A pressure sensor 13 also senses the inlet air flow. A fan 5 or a compressed air source forces cooling or ventilating air into the article of clothing. A measuring and evaluation unit 13 is connected to the sensors and the ventilator and determines the body fluid state of the person and will emit an alarm at a threshold value. The device and method are said to avoid excessive dehydration when working in adverse environments.
