PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a compound comprising a deuterated aromatic ring or a deuterated heterocycle, which method is applicable to various raw material compounds, can easily be operated, and obtains an object compound at a high yield.;SOLUTION: The method of producing a compound comprising a deuterated aromatic ring or a deuterated heterocycle is characterized by heating a compound comprising an aromatic ring or a heterocycle in the presence of heavy water, a transition metal, and a metal that generates deuterium. Preferable metal that generates deuterium includes one or more species of metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, magnesium, zinc, iron, lead and tin. Preferable transition metal includes one or more species of transition metal selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, and ruthenium.
