PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an environmental factor measuring method for rapidly and easily measuring the amount of sulfur oxide and the amount of flying salt content adhering to a structure material which is exposed to atmospheric environment, and to provide a thickness decrease prediction method of steel material, that uses an environmental factor measured by this measuring method. PSOLUTION: In this environmental factor measuring method, a metal material formed of alloy made of one pure metal of a group A: Ni, Cr, Co, Cu, Zn and Ag, or a group B: Fe, Al, Zr, Nb, Mo and Ta, or two or more metallic elements of them is exposed to the atmospheric environment, contact resistance variation per unit area of the metal material, in front and behind the exposure is measured, and the amount of sulfur oxide or the amount of flying salt content adhering to the structure material exposed to the atmospheric environment is determined, based on the contact resistance variation from the relation between the previously determined contact resistance variation per unit area of the metal material and the amount of sulfur oxide or the amount of flying salt content.
