PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate drawbacks of conventional technique by means of a scavenging method of simple constitution allowing to limit the air/fuel ratio of a fuel mixture and to increase supercharging and filling of a combustion chamber without degrading the shape thereof. PSOLUTION: The present invention relates to the scavenging method for residual burnt gas of a direct-injection internal combustion engine, notably of diesel type, comprising at least one cylinder including the combustion chamber 12, an exhausting means 14 controlled by an exhaust control means 42, an intake means 24 controlled by an intake control means 40, and a processing unit 44. The method includes, when the engine runs under low speed and high load conditions, carrying out a sequence of opening/closing of exhaust valves 18 during the exhaust phase of the engine, and during this exhaust valve opening/closing sequence, carrying out at least one sequence of opening/closing of intake valves 28 so as to achieve scavenging of the residual burnt gas.
