PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protein fiber having a quite novel structure, excellent in moisture absorbency, pyrogenicity by moisture absorption, heat-retaining property, mechanical characteristics, and aesthetic appearance, and suitably usable for textile products, and to provide a method for producing the fiber.;SOLUTION: The branched protein fiber has an outer layer at least part of which is rough in the longitudinal direction. The method for producing the fiber includes a protein decomposition process for decomposing part of the protein in the protein fiber, a washing process, and an external force action process. The branched protein fiber has a specific surface area larger than that of an unprocessed protein fiber, thus the fiber is excellent in heat-retaining property and moisture absorbency owing to increased immobile air layers. Therefore, fiber products is provided, which is light, warm, and excellent in pyrogenicity by moisture absorption, by using the branched protein fiber.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
