PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber for Raman amplification improving a signal-to-noise ratio in an optical transmission system using Raman amplification, and also to provide a Raman amplification optical transmission system using the optical fiber for Raman amplification.;SOLUTION: The optical fiber F2 for Raman amplification has a refractive index distribution that continuously varies along the propagation direction of signal light and having a Raman gain rate continuously varying in the transmission direction. The Raman amplification optical transmission system comprises: the optical fiber F2 for Raman amplification; a single mode optical fiber F1 having a refractive index distribution uniform in the propagation direction of signal light; and a Raman excitation light source 3 that is disposed in a rear side of the optical fiber F2 for Raman amplification with respect to the propagation direction and injects excitation light to the fiber F2 for Raman amplification, the excitation light propagating in an opposite direction to the propagation direction of the signal light.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
