PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce 1-hexene useful as a stock comonomer of linear low density polyethylene from ethylene with high selectivity by combining a chromium carbonyl complex with a coordinated neutral multidentate ligand having a tripod type structure and a metal alkyl compound. ;SOLUTION: A chromium carbonyl complex with a coordinated neutral multidentate ligand having a tripod type structure is used as one component forming the objective ethylene trimerization catalyst. The neutral multidentate ligand is not particularly limited but a tridentate ligand of the formula is, e.g. used as a suitable one. In the formula, each of (j), (k) and (m) is an integer of 0-6, each D1 is a divalent hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, each L1 is a substituent containing a group 14, 15, 16 or 17 element of the Periodic Table, G1 is C or Si and R1 is H, a 1-10C alkyl or a 1-10C aryl.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
