PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing mercerized pulp capable of furnishing paper with bulkiness, without damaging smoothness of the paper, when the pulp is used as a papermaking raw material, and to provide bulky paper containing the mercerized pulp, having the bulkiness (low density), and excellent in the smoothness.;SOLUTION: This method for producing the mercerized pulp comprises mercerizing chemical pulp of a broad-leaved tree by mechanically agitating and treating the chemical pulp with a kneader in an aqueous alkali solution having a concentration of not less than 9 wt% and not more than 50 wt%, so as to make the mercerized pulp have an average fiber length of not more than 0.5 mm. The bulky paper is made by mixing the mercerized pulp into paper stock in an amount of not less than 10 wt% and not more than 50 wt% based on a total amount of pulp and subjecting the mixed paper stock to mapermaking.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
