PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material and method for removing heavy metals by reducing heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium into stable insoluble substances, provided that the material is a mixture composition capable of maximizing characteristics inherent in a natural mineral so as to increase reducing activity of quartz diorite porphyry.;SOLUTION: The material for removing heavy metals utilizes quartz diorite porphyry. In the method, the mixture composition comprising a fine powder of calcined quartz diorite porphyry and a fine powder of a mineral containing rare earth elements is used. The mixture composition is contacted and mixed with soil containing heavy metal ions, an aqueous solution or sludge thereof. This increases the production of active hydrogen which is a reducing substance with a reducing activity, which leads to reduction of valence and stabilization of the heavy metal ions and fixation of heavy metals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
