PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ventilation cooling system for an optical device by which dust does not adhere to the surface of an optical system which dislikes dust or a cooled object constituting the optical system such as an optical space modulation element which forms an image during use and there is no temperature rise inside the device by clogging of a dust removal means and a projection type display device using the same. PSOLUTION: The ventilation cooling system is provided with a ventilation path 62 which guides the air taken in from an inlet 61 to cooled objects 25 to 27 constituting the optical system, a dust separation part 63 which is provided in the ventilation path and separates the dust contained in the air taken in from the inlet from the air by centrifugal force, a dust accumulation container 64 which stores the dust separated by the dust separation part and a ventilation device 65 which is provided on the ventilation path and revolves the air by the dust separation part by guiding the air from the input and blowing to the cooled objects.
