The present invention features a device having a high density array of through holes or a method of producing a "platen" and further cleaning and reshaping the surface of such a platen. The present invention further features a method of fabricating a high density array of chemical, biochemical and biological compounds having many advantages over conventional low density arrays. The present invention includes methods in which a number of physical, chemical or biological transformations can be performed consecutively or in parallel within each addressable through-hole of the device. In addition, the present invention includes a method of analyzing the content of an array, including analyzing the physical properties of the sample.
