PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic luminescent device material such as an electron transport material or luminescent material capable of light emission in high luminance and high chromatic purity by including a specific nitrogen-contg. heterocyclic compound. ;SOLUTION: This organic luminescent device contains a compound having a partial structure of formula I [R11 and R12 are each H or a substituent; X1 is oxygen, sulfur, (substituted) nitrogen or C(R13)R14 (R13 and R14 are each H or a substituent); Y1 is oxygen, sulfur or (substituted) nitrogen; M1 is a metal ion or H; and Z1 is an atom group necessary for forming a five- or six-membered ring] (e.g. a compound of formula II). The compound having the partial structure of formula I is obtained by the following process: ethyl acetate and dimethylformamide are added to salicylic acid followed by agitation, oxalyl chloride is then added to the mixture followed by agitation, benzoin and triethylamine are then added to the resultant mixture followed by agitation, ethyl acetate and water are then added to the resultant mixture followed by separating the resultant organic layer which, in turn, is washed with water, dehydrated and then concentrated, acetic acid and sodium acetate are then added to the compound thus formed, the mixture is then agitated under reflux and subsequently cooled, the solid thus deposited is recrystallized, and ethanol and zinc acetate dihydrate are then added to the resultant crystal followed by reflux and agitation and then cooling the system.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
