PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable hot working at low temp. and to suppress the secondary evils such as contamination, the increase in the weight as well by coating a part or the whole of the surface with metallic titanium. SOLUTION: At first, a round rod 10 composed of grain dispersed type titanium base composite material is produced by a vacuum sintering-hot extruding process. This round rod 10 is cut into columnar bodies 11 of prescribed length. The columnar bodies 11 are sealed into a cylindrical vessel 20 composed of pure titanium, the vessel 20 is subjected to hot isostatic pressing(HIP) and is subjected to diffused joining to the surfaces of the columnar bodies 11. After the HIP treatment, with the uniformization of the matrix as the purpose, solution heat treatment is executed. In this way, a surface modified composite material 30 in which the columnar grain dispersed type titanium base composite material is used as a base metal 31, and the whole of the surface is coated with a surface modifying layer (coated titanium) 32 can be obtd. In the case this surface modified composite material 30 is subjected to hot working, it is executed preferably at 600 to 800 deg.C.
