PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically compensating film, capable of optically compensating a liquid crystal cell by coating a liquid crystalline compound on a cellulose acetate film, and further to provide a method for producing a polarizing plate capable of improving light leakage and striped unevenness, and capable of providing a large liquid crystal display device having high display quality and high brightness by arranging the optically compensating film on one surface of a polarizing film.;SOLUTION: The optically compensating film is produced by subjecting a cellulose acetate film having a protecting layer formed on one surface to a saponification treatment to carry out the saponification treatment only of one surface on which the protecting layer is not formed, forming an oriented layer on the surface subjected to the saponification treatment, and coating an optically anisotropic layer comprising a liquid crystalline compound on the oriented layer to produce an optically compensating film. The polarizing plate is produced by peeling the protective layer of the optically compensating film, subjecting the peeled surface of the cellulose acetate to the saponification treatment, and laminating the surface subjected to the saponification treatment on one surface of the polarizing film.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
