PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device requiring no harmful substance, e.g. mercury, as a constituent element, being power-saving as a multi-color or white light source instead of a fluorescent lamp and having high luminance without problems with respect to color reproducibility and color rendering properties.;SOLUTION: The device has an excitation light source having a peak wavelength of the emission spectrum in a near UV or a blue emission range and a novel red light emitting fluorophor or a mixed fluorophor consisting of the red light emitting fluorophor and another fluorophor emitting a different color light arranged at such a position as for the fluorophor to absorb the light from the light source and emits light of a peak wavelength different from that of the fluorophor. The red light emitting fluorophor is of the formula: A(Eu1-x-yMxSmy)(W1-zMoz)2O8 (wherein A is at least one of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs, M is at least one of B, Al, Sc, Ga, In, Tl, Sb, Bi, Y, La, Gd, Lu, Nb, Ta, Hf and P, (x) is 0x0.3, (y) is larger than 0 and 0.1, and (z) is 0z1).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
