Preparation of an infusion or dialysis solution containing a bicarbonate (I) and carboxylic acid (II) and having a physiologically acceptable pH is claimed. Process involves heating a solution containing at least 2 mmol/l of at least one carboxylic acid ester at above 100 degrees C so that the ester is almost completely decomposed into acid and alcohol (N.B. The disclosure states that, in the sense of the invention, carbonic acid/esters are subsumed under carboxylic acids/esters) .
