According to the method, the non-ferrous metal content of the slag generated in the production of non-ferrous metals, such as copper or nickel, in suspension smelting furnaces is reduced by charging the furnace with metallurgical coke, the particles size ranging from 1 to 25 mm. Baffles can be positioned on the furnace roof, which prevent the small copper and nickel particles from being drifted to the back of the furnace; the particles are carried away with the slag. The baffle forces the small particles to settle in the reduction zone of the furnace.
