The method involves introducing a suspension (S) via an inlet (2). Heavy parts (3) are enriched at an inner wall of a hydrocyclone (1) in consequence of centrifugal forces, and guided to a reject discharge (4) in an axial direction. The heavy parts-poor or heavy parts-free suspension is collected in a central area of the hydrocyclone, and guided to a useful material outlet (5). An electrical conductivity of a wear detector (7) is measured permanently or in certain time intervals using a measuring device (8). A signal is given during a change of the conductivity or interruption. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a hydrocyclone separating heavy parts from a fiber suspension (2) a separating cone comprising a rotationally symmetric housing.
