The present invention is concerned with the detection of the production of the human precursor neurokinin B by the placenta and to the detection of the production of neurokinin B gene products, or variants, or fragments thereof as a means of predicting the onset of pregnancy induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia or related foetal complications (or following their course). The application is also directed to methods of preventing or treating pregnancy-induced hypertension or pre-eclampsia by suppressing the effects of excessive neurokinin B secreted into maternal blood.
