AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM FOR PROCESSING MODERNIZED HANDWRITTEN BANK CHEQUE

A cheque processing system titled as “An automated system for processing modernized handwritten bank cheque”. My cheque design and the technology which processes the cheque are disclosed here. In US and many other countries, bank cheques are preprinted with the account number (3) and the cheque number (4) in MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) ink and format as such, these two numeric fields can be read and processed using automated techniques. However the amount field (1) and date field (2) on a filled in cheque is usually read by human eyes and involves significant time and cost, especially when one considers that about 68 billion cheques are processed per annum in US alone. In India, the bank clerks have to read the account number (3), cheque number (4), amount (1) and date (2) and the entire process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Automated cheque processing has been an area of research in image processing for a long time, but it has only been in recent years that complete systems with reading accuracy in the range of 20-60% and reading error 1-3% have begun to be installed. Each one of us will have a different handwriting characteristics hence this system will never satisfy the bank’s needs. To get rid of all these problems I designed a modernized cheque in which the amount will be written in seven segment format as in digital watches. My cheque incorporates all the features of a normal one. The modification is only at the places where date (2) and amount (1) are written. And, it complies with the specifications, stipulated under the Negotiable Instruments (N.I.) Act 1881. The customers can fill this cheque easily with the help of sample numerals (5) given at the bottom of this cheque. Signature (6) can be verified with the help of my signature verification module. My system accepts a cheque just like an ATM system, processes it, updates the database and gives the cash to the customer within a second and my software reduces most of the clerical tasks and saves much time.
