7. ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A natural mucoadhesive carrier suitable for buccal transmucosal delivery of therapeutic agents is disclosed. The carrier allows controlled release of the therapeutic agent via buccal mucosal tissue. The carrier is a polysaccharide hydrogel extracted from a natural source and purified, which is used as a mucoadhesive polymer, binding and sustaining agent in the development of unidirectional, bilayered, mucoadhesive tablets containing therapeutic agent, which can improve the bioavailability of the incorporated therapeutic agent and reduce its dose, which, in turn, reduces the dose-related side-effects of the therapeutic agent.
