OLIBANUM RESIN AS MICROENCAPSULATING AGENT FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE OF ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS

The present invention relates to the field of Pharmaceutical Technology and describes olibanum resin, a natural lipophilic polymer as microencapsulating agent and microencapsulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients by the olibanum resin for obtaining controlled release. The invention also describes novel controlled release microcapsule compositions employing olibanum resin for obtaining controlled release of several APIs. The novel controlled release microcapsule compositions are presented as spherical, discrete, free - flowing microcapsules in the size range 300 - 800 jam, in which the API is present essentially uniformly dispersed in olibanum resin polymer with or without other additives such as diluents and solubilizers. The novel microcapsule compositions employing olibanum resin are suitable for producing controlled release of a large number of APIs belonging to different chemical and pharmacological categories as a platform technology for obtaining controlled release of APIs. The microcapsule compositions developed in the invention are suitable for once a day and twice a day controlled release of several APIs.
