The present invention provides an improved selective electrode for the quantitative estimation of calcium ion in solution. The electrode comprises of a glass capillary (1) of diameter 2-3 mm, one end of which is open and the other end is fixed to a sleeve (2) with a screw thread inside it. The length of the capillary is in the range of 80-100 mm and its open end is made smooth and planar. The top end of the glass capillary is tightly and concentrically fitted to the bottom side of the sleeve (2). A stainless steel rod (4) of diameter ranging from 1.8 to 2.8 mm is rigidly fitted to the bottom end of the screw head (3) such that the stainless steel rod moves concentrically up and down gliding along the inner walls of the glass capillary (1) as the head (3) is screwed upwards or downwards. The brass screw head (3) at the top provides electrical contact to the stainless steel rod. The bottom end of the stainless steel rod touches the ion exchanger composition (5) and hereby provides electrical contact.
