AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF BROMOPHENOL USING MANGANESE NODULE OR ITS LEACHED RESIDUES

The present invention provides an improved process of the preparation of bromophenol using Manganese nodules or its leached residue. The phenol is treated KBr in acetic acid in the presence of catalyst and oxidant H2O2 The catalyst used is Manganese nodules or its leached residue. The reaction mixture is filtered, washed in ether followed by NaHCO3 and then the organic and ether layers separated. The Para bromophenol product is the predominant one may be due to Bronsted acid sites. Water-washed samples show higher percentage of conversion due to higher surface properties of the sample.
