In this invention, a method and an apparatus are provided for on-line tuning of parameters of a PIPD controller. The PIPD controller which is structurally different from many PID variants overcomes the problems of integral wind-up and derivative kick phenomena often associated with forward path analog PID controllers. The method includes a procedure for identification of process dynamics and automatic on-line tuning of the controller. The on-line tuning apparatus includes a relay connected in series with a controlled device, an adaptive noise filter and the feedback path PIPD controllers. The on-line tuning apparatus is implemented on a personal computer using real time windows target for a real time control system.
