The present invention relates to the synthesis of γ-Fe2O3 by dissolving the precursor mixture comprising at least a ferric salt and organic amides/hydrazide in a solvent and subjecting the solution to microwave radiation at a temperature sufficient to obtain a foamy, X-ray crystalline mass, further exposing the said mass to microwave radiation to selectively isolate the  phase of the iron oxide.
