The present invention relates to a method for synergistically enhancing the flame retarding activity of a flame retardant selected from the group consisting of brominated flame retardants, phosphorus containing flame retardants and inorganic flame retardants in a polymer substrate, wherein the flame retardant is present in an amount of 0.25 to 60% by weight, which comprises adding thereto 0.25% to 10% by . weight of, the polymer substrate of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of (a) nitroxyl stabilizers, (b) hydroxylamine stabilizers, (c) substituted hydroxylamine stabilizers of the formula (lIIb) or (IIIa) where in the components are asdescribed in the description.
