The apparatus (1) comprises a support surface; a dosing device (10) above this surface for depositing a dosed amount of the food product (8) in the direction of this surface; and a device (3) for transporting the substrates along this surface in the machine direction. The support surface is at least partly defined by a portion of the upper side of a belt (11) in a loading position. The belt extends around a guide means (13) which extends parallel to the support surface and which can be moved backwards and forwards along and beneath this surface between the loading position, in which the pourable food product is supported by this surface, and a discharge position in which the support surface region of the belt extends around the guide means, so that the pourable food product is allowed to fall onto or into the substrates. A control means is provided for the apparatus.
