The invention relates to use of strains of the parapox ovis virus against organ fibrosis. In particular the invention relates to the human use of inactivated parapox viruses for the prophylaxis and the treatment of illnesses associated with increased collagen deposition, said illnesses affecting inner organs, e.g. the liver, and also skin and the appendages thereof. Liver fibrosis or liver cirrhosis resulting from viral hepatitis or ethanol-induced liver diseases such as cystic fibrosis are especially relevant.
