The device has a chain drive (11) to which multiple space shields (12) are fastened. The shields are designed to convey the floating sludge to a removal device along a fluid surface. A drive motor (16) drives the chain drive. The drive motor and the chain drive form a structural unit, which is supported movably or floatably with respect to the tank. The removal device is formed as skimmer (17) and a longitudinal scraper is provided for conveying the floating sludge to an area coated by space shields that are made of plastic.
