A procedure to identify and select targets of virulence genes in pathogenic bacteria, comprising the following stages: - use of a strain of the pathogenic bacteria, - generation of mutant strains for inactivation of genes encoding virulence factors, - determination of the virulence of the mutated bacteria in an experimental model of infection, and its effect on enteric colonization in an axenic mouse model, and - the identification and selection of bacteria with a mutation in the genes that demonstrate to have all of the following characteristics : genes not essential for in vitro proliferation, not essential for commensal colonization, but essential for in vitro serum resistance, and essential, in the host, for blood dissemination.
