Use of a castanospermine ester for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of a hepatitis C virus infection, which comprises a castanospermine ester having the formula: (See formula) in which R, R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, C1-14 alkanoyl, C1-14 alkenoyl, cyclohexanecarbonyl, C1-8 alkoxyacetyl, (See formula) naphthalenecarbonyl optionally substituted with methyl or halogen; phenyl (C2-6 alkanoyl) in which the phenyl is optionally substituted with methyl or halogen; cinnamoyl; pyridinecarbonyl optionally substituted with methyl or halogen; dihydropyridincarbonyl optionally substituted with C1-10 alkyl; thiophenecarbonyl optionally substituted with methyl or halogen; or furancarbonyl optionally substituted with methyl or halogen; Y is hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, C 1-4 alkylsulfonyl, C 1-4 alkylmercapto, cyano or dimethylamino; Y '' is hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, halogen or is combined with Y to give 3,4-methylenedioxy; Y "is hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy or halogen; in which at least one, but not more than two, of R, RI and R2 is hydrogen; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or derivative thereof.
