Smoke detector (20) comprising a smoke detection chamber, an operating circuit (24) for detecting smoke particles in the chamber and producing an alarm signal when the smoke particles are detected; the smoke detector having an electrical circuit system to produce an alarm signal, the electric circuit system including a coil (64); an input receiver (22) to initiate a check in response to a received check signal; an evaluation device (26) for determining operating characteristics of the operating circuit that vary with time; a controller (32) to report the determined operating characteristics of the smoke detector in response to a received signal, the controller being adapted to encode a signal emitted with the determined operating characteristics and to use the encoded emitted signal to control the coil a effects of producing a coded low power RF signal that includes the determined operating characteristics.
