A process for preparing fluoromethyl-2,2,2-trifluoro-1- (trifluoromethyl) ethyl ether (sevoflurane) comprising the following steps: (a) reacting a mixture comprising 1,1,1,3,3,3- hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), formaldehyde and hydrogen fluoride to form sevoflurane; (b) distilling an azeotropic mixture of sevoflurane and hydrogen fluoride from the reaction mixture; and (c) separating sevoflurane from the azeotropic mixture.
