A method for performing tests at the system level and a first intelligent electronic device (IED) of "Intelligent Electronic Device" (21) of a substation automation system (SA) of the English "Substation Automation"), with the that checking a function at the system level of the SA system, which involves the first IED (21) and a second IED (22), is tested based on network messages that are received by the first IED (21) in a network of communications (20), comprising the method - the connection of a test device (30) different from the second IED (22) to the communication network (20), - the reading, by the test device (30), of the standardized description of the functions implemented of the device of the second IED (22), - the sending, by means of the test device (30), of network messages indicating the behavior of the second IED (22), in accordance with said function in the system level, over the common network ication (20) of the first IED (21) and - monitoring of the behavior of the first IED (21) in response to said network messages.
