A method for transmitting data between a transmitter (50) and a receiver (52) using a frame (70) having a sequence number (72) and a retransmission indicator (74) comprising the steps of: a) transmitting the frame (70) a first time with said retransmission indicator (74) set to false and the sequence number (72) comprising a first number of bits and set to the least significant bits of an index code comprising a second number of bits, greater in number than the first number, b) increase a value of said index code for the use of a following frame; and c) retransmitting the frame (70) a second time with said indicator (74) set to true if a negative acknowledgment message containing said frame index code (70) is received on said transmitter (50).
