The invention relates to the use of peptide antagonists at NMDA receptors forthe manufacture of a medicament to influence thefunction of NMDA-receptor-controlled cells, such as neurons or glial cells inthe central nervous system. The medicament comprisesnormally glutamic acid-terminating peptides chosen among (1-5)GnRH, (1-3)IGF-I, (1-37)GRF and C-peptide of insulin. The medicamentcould be used for the treatment of acute or chronic disorders of the centralnervous system and the treatment of hypoxic, ischemic andmetabolic brain disorders such as stroke and hypoglycemia, traumatic orinflammatory injuries to the brain or traumatic head injuries. Italso relates to a method for treatment.
