Amine containing compounds and their use in thegeneration of cytofectin:polynucleotide complexes for transfectionof cells, formulations, counterions, and reaction conditions formaximizing the transfection include using cationic aminecompounds that have general structure (I), wherein R4 and R5 are apair of same or different lipoyl moieties selected from a groupconsisting of an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkanoyl, alkenoyl, oralkynoyl groups and for R1, R2, and R3 at least two are hydroxylated,ether containing, or acyloxy containing alkyl, alkynyl, oralkynyl groups or at least one amine bonded halogen containingmoiety selected from a group consisting of a halogenated alkyl,alkenyl, or alkynyl group or a mixture of at least one halogencontaining moiety selected from a group consisting of a halogenated alkyl,alkenyl, or alkynyl group and at least one hydroxylated, ethercontaining, or acyloxy containing alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group, and X- isan oxyanion or halide counterion.
