METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF CRUDE OIL AND BITUMEN DEAD OIL VISCOSITY AND DENSITY

The present invention is directed to the measurement of viscosity and densityin crude oil and inparticular in solvent recovered bitumen from convention core, drill cuttingsor other reservoirsamples. The process comprises the steps of extracting oil from a sample usinga polar volatilesolvent; adding a second solvent selected to prevent light end loss from theoil during removal ofthe extraction solvent and to facilitate the complete removal of theextraction solvent;sequentially and partially removing the second solvent from a series ofsamples of the bitumenextract; analyzing the resulting suite of samples for viscosity, andextrapolating the data to zerosolvent content to determine the viscosity of the solvent-free, unaltered oilin the core or otherreservoir sample. By using selected solvents and methods such as gaschromatography or gaschromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS), the present method accuratelyestimates solvent-free viscosity and density of bitumen that has been solvent extracted fromcore. Solvent contentscan also be determined using other methods including spectroscopic methodssuch as infrared orUV/visible spectroscopy.
