BIOFILTER MEDIA AND BIOFILTRATION APPARATUS EMPLOYING SAME

A filter medium comprises a mass of elongate, differently orientated, shape--sustainingelongate elements comprising a sponge material, the different orientation oftheelements causing these to form a self supporting open network which providessubstantialinterstitial space between the elements, this space preferably being largerthan the totalvolume of the elements themselves. The sponge material may be cellulose orPVA. Theelements may be tubular, or they may have a reinforcing core to retain theirshape. Thereinforcing core may be of stiff synthetic plastic material. Filtrationapparatus comprisessuch a mass of filter medium in a tank with ports for admitting air forfiltering andexhausting filtered air. The tank may be separated into several sections byperforated screenssupporting respective layers of filter medium.
