SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REASSIGNING AN UPLINK TIME SLOT FROM A CIRCUIT-SWITCHED GPRS MOBILE DEVICE TO A DIFFERENT PACKET-SWITCHED GPRS MOBILE DEVICE
A wireless communicationsystem (100) includes a first mobiledevice (110) with a circuit-switchedconnection using adaptive multi-rate(AMR) speech coding. This first mobiledevice (110) is assigned to a first time slotby a base station (130). The base station(130) also serves at least a second mobiledevice (120) with a packet-switchedconnection and assigned to a second timeslot. The base station (130) instructs thesecond mobile device (120) to transmitdata on the first time slot, as well as itsoriginally-assigned second time slot,during a no-speech-data AMR frame ofthe first mobile device (110). The basestation ceases to instruct the second mobiledevice (120) to transmit data on the firsttime slot when it receives an AMR AccessBurst (AAB) from the first mobile device(110). A 52-multiframe structure, used bythe second mobile device (120) when it istransmitting on the first time slot, includesat least one A-idle frame when the firstmobile device (110) can transmit its AAB.
