The presentinvention provides compositionsand methods for regulatingexpression of heterologousnucleotide sequences in a plant.Compositions are novel nucleotidesequences for a stress-inducedpromoter endogenously associatedwith the rye CBF31 codingregion. A method for expressinga heterologous nucleotide sequencein a plant or plant cell using theregulatory sequences disclosedherein is provided. The methodcomprises transforming a plantcell to comprise a heterologousnucleotide sequence operablylinked to a regulatory sequence ofthe present invention and optionally regenerating a stably transformed plantfrom the transformed plant cell.
