The present invention provides compositions comprising inhibitors of prolyl hydroxylase(s), and methods of using the compositions to promote bone healing, improve bone mass or volume, promote osteoblast cellular differentiation, and/or promote osteogenesis. The compositions of the present invention also may be used in the treatment of various bone-loss or bone density decreasing disorders. The present invention further provides a screening tool for the determination of additional compounds capable of promoting bone healing, promoting osteoblast cellular differentiation, improving bone mass or volume, and/or promoting osteogenesis.
