A method for automatic address configuration in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), wherein the network comprises one or more mobile communication nodes, the mobile communication nodes being aware of their geographic position, as well as one or more attachment points providing access to an external network, and wherein the attachment points broadcast IP (Internet Protocol) signaling messages containing the network prefix assigned to their served link, is characterized in that geographic areas are specified, each area being associated with at least one of said attachment points, and that a position-based routing protocol is implemented for forwarding the signaling messages broadcasted by the attachment points to the communication nodes within the corresponding geographic area, wherein the communication nodes generate an IP address on the basis of the prefix contained in the received signaling message.
